Do You Think You Have Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?
- Are you an adult who suspects you have ADHD but would like a formal diagnosis?
- Does being neurodivergent in this way present challenges at work, school, or in your relationships?
- Would you benefit from having a better understanding of how your brain works and the resources available to you?
Perhaps you’ve gone through life always feeling different. However, up until now, you have never had your suspicions confirmed. You may struggle with holding your attention on any one thing or find that your mind wanders during conversations. As a result, your loved ones may have accused you of being aloof or mad when, in fact, you simply get distracted easily.
You Might Have A Hard Time At Work Or School
Accomplishing tasks may prove challenging because you have trouble staying motivated and focused. If you tend to be disorganized, miss deadlines, or not be able to multitask, you might run into problems at work or school. This could lead to feelings of stress, shame, and anxiety which magnifies your symptoms.
What’s more, your family and friends may become frustrated whenever you lose something, don’t finish a project, or can’t articulate your feelings to them. Rather than be judged and misunderstood, you just want to better understand of what you’re dealing with. If only you could get some clear-cut answers about why your mind works this way and identify helpful resources, you wouldn’t feel so lost.
Oftentimes, medications and accommodations that can help someone with ADHD require—or are easier to access with—an official diagnosis. The good news is that neuropsychological testing for ADHD in adults can provide you with this clear diagnosis. With clarity comes more concrete solutions that can help improve your quality of life.
Many Adults With ADHD Were Never Diagnosed As Children
In recent decades, we have learned more about ADHD and gotten better at diagnosing it in children and teens. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 10 percent of adolescents and teens were diagnosed with ADHD between 2016 and 2019. [1]
However, there are presently millions of adults with ADHD who have never received a formal diagnosis. Despite WebMD estimating that 5 percent of American adults have ADHD, studies suggest that “less than 20 percent of adults with ADHD are aware they have it.” [2] For higher-functioning adults, the symptoms of ADHD are often mistaken for anxiety, depression, or trauma. Without a proper diagnosis, many of us remain stuck. We don’t realize that if only we received proper treatment and resources, we could harness the power of our neurodivergent brain and get the support we need to flourish.
The Benefits Of Receiving An ADHD Diagnosis
Accessing support services for ADHD at school or work often requires a formal diagnosis, as does obtaining appropriate medication. An ADHD assessment with thorough and detailed results can help us advocate for our needs. Further, it can help our family and friends better understand the legitimacy of our challenges so they can support us with more sensitivity and empathy. With a diagnosis, we can feel less alone and stigmatized, no longer wondering what is "wrong" with us.
With greater knowledge and awareness, we can shift our mindset from one of fear to one of hope. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, with ADHD testing, we can get answers and a clear direction forward.
ADHD Testing Is The Key To Self-Understanding, Treatment, And Support
If you’ve never received an ADHD diagnosis, you might feel like you’re the only person struggling with its challenging symptoms. However, at Scottsville Counseling Center, we specialize in helping children and adults with ADHD. We have access to treatment and resources that will ensure you never feel alone or unsupported again.
Because the presentation of ADHD can be as varied and unique as each person, diagnosing it without testing can be difficult. Neuropsychological testing for ADHD uses evidence-based tools to help identify symptoms and pinpoint an accurate diagnosis consistently and time-efficiently. With a definitive diagnosis, you can receive treatment that is tailored to your needs as well as establish appropriate medication management, if necessary.
What To Expect In ADHD Testing
Having worked with many clients with ADHD, we take a strength-based approach, recognizing the resilience, adaptation, and ingenuity having a neurodivergent brain requires. With a better understanding of how your brain functions and processes information, you can build confidence and recognize ADHD as a superpower rather than a hindrance.
We want you to feel seen, heard, and supported throughout the testing process. Not only will we identify what your diagnosis is, but we will also help you determine the tools and treatment options that will best support you moving forward.
The ADHD Testing Process
We provide adults with neuropsychological testing, evaluations, and assessments for ADHD, Autism, intelligence, achievement, personality, and executive functioning. Here’s a breakdown of the process:
- Because we are private pay, no referrals are required for ADHD testing;
- We will initially schedule a 90-minute preliminary meeting to complete intake paperwork before the first testing session;
- ADHD testing usually takes 5-6 hours to complete but may take up to 8 hours. Although we usually schedule it in 2-hour blocks, we can schedule up to a 4-hour session if needed. For ADHD testing, we incorporate the WAIS-IV test and assessment, WRAT-5, Brief Test of Attention, and BRIEF 2;
- You can anticipate the ADHD evaluation process will take about one month to complete before receiving results;
- We will schedule a follow-up appointment to review the report where recommendations for possible treatment options, resources, and accommodations will be covered;
- Any therapeutic services you may require for ongoing support—such as individual, couples, or family counseling tailored to your diagnosis, yoga, massage, or meditation—can be provided by Scottsville Counseling Center. With proper treatment, it is possible to experience a reduction in symptoms which can be tracked with further, occasional testing.
Using proven, evidence-based testing measures provides a foundation for garnering data that will yield definitive answers. ADHD testing allows you to learn more about yourself, your diagnosis, and the specific way your symptoms present so you can work to your strengths and make adaptations that will enhance your life.
Most importantly, you are not the problem—the problem is the problem. ADHD testing and assessments can help you unlock the door to your full potential.
But Maybe You’re Not Sure If ADHD Testing Is Right For You…
I’m worried I can’t afford ADHD assessments for adults.
We strive to make ADHD testing as affordable as possible. The initial 90-minute intake appointment is $150. Thereafter, we bill at $100 per hour. Because testing is scheduled in increments, we can spread it out over time so the cost isn’t billed at once. Additionally, we accept Health Savings Account cards (HSAs), and if your private insurance allows out-of-network billing, we can assist in seeking possible reimbursement for your payment.
Getting an ADHD test for adults sounds time-consuming—I’m too busy.
We respect and support busy schedules. That’s why we offer afternoon and evening ADHD testing windows to help support access to services. Plus, we break neuropsychological testing for ADHD down into manageable blocks of time so that you don't have to lose an entire day. Rather than schedule all the testing at once, we can break it down into 2-hour increments for your convenience. We will work with your schedule to make it work.
What’s more, ADHD testing and evaluations arrive at a diagnosis much faster than traditional talk therapy. We offer validated tests based on evidence-based research that will generate a definitive diagnosis.
I’m a private person and don’t like the idea of receiving the label of an ADHD diagnosis.
We highly value privacy and confidentiality, too. This is a key reason why Scottsville Counseling Center has opted for the private-pay model. This means your diagnosis is not provided to a third-party payer—i.e., an insurance company—unless you file for out-of-network reimbursement. If you choose to share your diagnosis with others, that will be your sole decision.
